Dare to Pair
Cabrillo Community College's culinary students are teaming up with the Surf City Vintners group of Santa Cruz wineries for the first annual 'Dare to Pair' food and wine challenge on May 22, 2010. Teams of culinary students will prepare delicious appetizers paired with wine from each of the 12 Surf City wineries in a competition to be judged by the public for a 'People's Choice' Award, as well as by leading local chefs. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, and for the public to enjoy their culinary creations paired with our great local wines," said Eric Carter, director of the Cabrillo Community College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program. The competition will take place Saturday, May 22, 2010, 12:00-3:00pm at the tasting rooms of the Surf City Vintners wineries off of Swift and Ingalls Streets in Santa Cruz, all located within two blocks of each other. Participants will visit the wineries, enjoy the wine and food pairings, and vote on their favorites. Tickets cost $50 each and are available online at pinoaltorestaurant.org (click on “Dare to Pair"). All proceeds will benefit the Cabrillo Community College Culinary Arts program. Local chefs judging the competition include: Brad Briske, Gabriella; Michael Clark, Michael's on Main; Chris Levesque, El Salchichero; Charlotte Moreno, Lillian's; Charlie Parker, Cellar Door. As well, the public participants will vote on their favorites for the 'People's Choice' awards. The awards ceremony will take place at 4:00pm. The Surf City Vintners group of 12 boutique wineries and tasting rooms offers a vibrant urban wine tasting experience. The individual wineries are in close proximity on the Westside of Santa Cruz on Ingalls Street, Swift Street, and the Old Sash Mill, most in renovated warehouse spaces. The area has become a hip example of urban renewal. The wineries showcase the wines of a group of leading winemakers of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and are small, family-owned and operated local businesses. Visitors often meet and talk directly with the winemakers. The Surf City Vintners wineries include: Copious Winery; Equinox Champagne Cellar; Hillcrest Terrace Vineyards; MJA Vineyards; Odonata Wines; Pelican Ranch Winery; Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard (including Quinta Cruz); Silver Mountain; Sones Cellars; Storrs Winery and Vineyards; Trout Gulch Vineyards; Vino Tabi. For more information, see the group website at www.surfcityvintners.com. Cabrillo Community College's Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program provides the student with basic culinary food preparation and service, advanced a la carte and buffet food production and service, as well as food service management training for the industry. Cabrillo College offers both a Certificate of Proficiency and an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management.

Solar Energy Workshop
Suntrek Solar is hosting a fun, educational, solar energy workshop at the beautiful Seascape Beach Resort. Enjoy delicious appetizers from Sanderlings Restaurant and wine from Beringer Winery. See why so many people have been switching to solar energy. Learn about solar electricity (photovoltaic's), solar hot water and solar pool heating systems. We will discuss how each type of system works, the benefits, financial returns and much more. You will also have the opportunity to see the solar pool heating system Suntrek installed, at the Seascape Beach Resort. Our whole way of life revolves around fossil fuels - a non-renewable resource that may be exhausted within the next 30 years. Our daily use of fossil fuels to power our homes, businesses, and vehicles comes with an exorbitant price. In addition to subjecting ourselves to skyrocketing energy costs, we are continuing to inflict serious harm on our environment and intensify our dependence on foreign countries, many with hostile political climates. Since 1991, Suntrek has installed over 20,000 successful solar installations. Suntrek makes it easy! Install a solar electricity system for as little as $0 down. By replacing traditional energy sources that rely on fossil fuels, Suntrek's solar power solutions help eliminate the toxic emissions that pollute our environment and accelerate global warming. In addition to feeling good about using renewable energy, you will be happy to know that your solar system will pay for itself through tax credits, rebates and huge energy savings! 5:30-7:00pm at the Seascape Beach Resort .
